Concert Review: Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, Mohegan Sun, May 4, 2013

Last night we ventured up the interstate to Mohegan Sun Casino to commune with our favorite rock and roller, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band. Bob never disappoints us. This was our fourth Bob Seger concert in 17 years. I have been a Bob Seger fan since 1968 ;) . Inside the music of our heart that translates to 45 years of wonderful music. Amazingly he showed no signs of stopping last night but it is imminent that he will retire in a few years.

My favorite moment of the night was when Bob said, “Okay, We go back to Live Bullet“, one of the best live rock albums of all time, bar none. He dug down deep transporting us back to Cobo Hall in Detroit Michigan, 1975. Bob and the Silver Bullet performed the connected songs, “Travelin Man” and “Beautiful Loser”. It was better than the original live recording. I became transfixed by the timeless passion he raised through these two songs.

He showcased two new songs from his forthcoming studio album that he projects will release August-September 2013, “All the Roads” and “California Stars”. Bob performed them seated at center stage with an acoustic guitar. When can I place my pre-order Capitol Records? C’mon. c’mon, c’mon ;)

I especially liked the song, “California Stars”,  with lyrics by Woody Guthrie. I urge the reader of this blog post to have a listen on Spotify to and then read up on the Nora Guthrie project, Mermaid Avenue Bob Seger has been majorly  influenced by Billy Bragg, Wilco and the memory of Woody Guthrie. I find Bob Seger’s country songs are perhaps his most heartfelt musical moments, as he shares his deep love for country music.

Bob Seger commented to the fans holding up “Happy Birthday Bob” birthday signs that his birthday was on Monday May 6th. He thanked them for recognizing the event ahead of time. He then stated, “I’m going to be 68 and I feel good.” Intuitively he followed those remarks with “Rock and Roll Never Forgets”, the last song of the night.

We left the arena feeling great about the legend, the person, Bob Seger. There were couples dancing in the hallway as we walked out with the night moves.

Rock and Roll (And Evie) Never Forgets

I just have to share this wonderful human interest story with my readers. It is sure to bring a tear to your eye. It did mine :) Maybe you read or heard about this beautiful miracle of life, rock and roll and being a devout fan. We happen to be major Bob Seger fans ourselves and believe in miracles too.

Bob Seger wrote the song, “Rock and Roll Never Forgets”. I found out today that Evie Branan never forgot Bob Seger and he never will forget Evie Branan.

Evie Branan was is a coma for five years. Her first words when she woke up from that coma were, “I want to  go to a Bob Seger concert.” Talk about your dream come true.

Well I am happy to share that Evie Branan got to go to that concert. They picked her up in a limousine and drove her there in style. She sat in the special fan luxury box with friends and helpers. She had a beer, got up and danced to some good old rock and roll.

Then she was taken backstage to meet Bob Seger, Alto Reed and Bob’s family (among others) how cool is that!!!!

Movie: Not Fade Away

The David Chase flim (Creator of the Sopranos), Not Fade Away speaks to the teen spirit inside us that rock and roll sets free. I love the soundtrack and what the trailer says to the rebel spirit ever-present in the music of our heart. It doesn’t hurt either that  the Executive Producer is Steven Van Zandt.;)

Hope to see this movie soon…

The Rolling Stones Steamrolling Ahead

The Rolling Stones continue to steam roll ahead with their 50th Anniversary concerts. Last night they played the first of four NY area concerts (this includes the recently announced appearance at the 12.12.12 Superstorm Sandy Benefit) at The Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Rolling STones

The Stones marketing machine is operating at fever pitch. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards will make their first appearance on the David Letterman Show to announce the Top 10 List.

Tickets have been next to impossible to get so we have decided to watch the Pay Per View show on Saturday December 15th.

I especially like this concert footage from the 2003 tour in Twickenham, England.

The Rolling Stones Go Digital

The Rolling Stones introduced two new digital content solutions, fresh on the heels of GRRR! the most definitive Rolling Stones Greatest Hits collection ever ;)

1) Rolling Stones Official App

The Beach Boys: Live in Concert – 50th Anniversary Tour (DVD and Blu-Ray)

We’ve been to 18 concerts so far this year. In fairness to the upcoming shows with Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Patti Smith Group concert 12/4/12 in Bridgeport, Ct. and The Rascals on 12/22/12 at The Capitol Theatre in Portchester, NY the best concert we have seen in 2012 was The Beach Boys 50th Anniversary Tour concert at Mohegan Sun Casino Arena. Bar None ;)

I am glad to see that they were filmed on this historic concert tour. The DVD and Blu-Ray edition of  The Beach Boys: Live in Concert – 50th Anniversary Tour will be available on November 20, 2012.

Brian Wilson sums it up best.

“The Beach Boys 50th Anniversary tour meant so much to me personally; performing with the guys again was an absolute thrill. I’m so glad we captured it on film so that everyone, whether you were there or not, will be able to see what a historic event it was.” Brian Wilson

The new video presents a shortened version of the Beach Boys’ show with 21 songs, including classics and deep album cuts, from the band’s regular 40 to 50 songs sets each night of the tour.

What I love about this concert DVD is that we can get together and “Do It Again” and again and again :)

Best Concert I’ve Ever Been To…

I was recently asked, “What’s the best concert you’ve ever been to?”. I have been debating that question within for the past few days.

I have attended 381+ concerts in 43 years. I am still fact checking that number ;) because it’s probably been even more shows than that. It’s a tough question because I have seen some great concerts and musicians over the decades, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Santana, U2, Metallica (the last two listed in the same night…) to just name a few.

I have to say the best concert I’ve ever been to was The Rolling Stones at Madison Square Garden on June 25th, 1975.

There is an electricity, an excitement that the Stones create that is unequaled by any other band. They exceed the claim they are the “World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band.”. I am sure some might argue with that title . I’m open to hearing your opinion but only if you have seen the Rolling Stones will I entertain that discussion.

There are several reasons why the Stones in ’75 was the best concert I’ve ever been to see. The first was the adventure we had that night. I bought the tickets for this event by standing in line at Ticketmaster. The show sold out in record time and I got nose bleed seats at the Garden. By the time the night was over we were on the floor of MSG. We had so much fun eluding the ushers and finding unoccupied seats on various levels of the Garden. Each time we moved down a level the music and crowd intensified for us.

The second reason was how good The Rolling Stones were collectively. The stage started as a star folded up like an unblossomed flower. Keith Richards rang out the licks of Honky Tonk Women as he pushed the star edge down to reach the fans. He sounded sharp, brilliant as he played his guitar in a low slung fashion.

Mick Jagger was the rooster on acid, prancing about in his full body white sequinned costume. He implored us to love him and we did with every word he sang for us. Jagger put on quite the show, at one point he was added to a trapeze and flew out over the audience at us. Another time he rode an inflated dragon that spat confetti at us.

Ron Wood and Keith Richards jousted with their axes and played tasty, competitive riffs.

Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts held down the rhythm section. I was very impressed with Charlie’s drumming skills. He played that drop down beat on “Gimme Shelter” with all his strength.

It was a real coup to get tickets to see them that year. The luck of the draw for seats was the fact that they played the Garden six nights straight, which increased chances for a seat. I think its going to be next to impossible to see their 50th Reunion Tour, but we’ll certainly try to get to one of their concerts.

Watch this video clip of the forthcoming Rolling Stones documentary, Crossfire Hurricane and tell me you don’t feel the charisma they generate ;)

Led Zeppelin, Dancing Days Are Here Again!

What a great one-two punch for Led Zeppelin and their fans.

Photo Credit: Ross Halfin/Exclusive by Getty Image

First, we learn that Led Zeppelin will be one of the recipients of the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, D.C. on December 2nd. Led Zeppelin will receive 1) honors as a band, then 2) John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant will each receive Kennedy Center Honors. We will get a nice day after Christmas present as the event will air December 26th on CBS.

Second, it was announced today that a theatrical release of Led Zeppelin’s 2007 one-night-only reunion concertCelebration Day will be distributed on 1,500 screens on October 17th. The recorded concert from December 10th, 2007 at London’s 02 Arena will later be issued on “multiple audio and video formats” on November 19th. I am rubbing my hands with glee over these eventualities.

Dancing days are here again as the summer evenings grow
I got my flower, I got my power, I got a woman who knows.

Chorus: I said it’s alright. You know it’s alright – I guess it’s all in my heart

You’ll be my only, my one and only. Is that the way it should start?

Oh Yeah and then some ;)
