Building A More Perfect Musical Brain – The Echo Nest

I continually emphasize my passionate technology interest in what The Echo Nest is accomplishing as this amazingly deft music cloud back-end. The more I discover and interpret what they are building, the more enthusiastic I get about the future evolution of music.

Just after I wrote about “The Echo Nest Moves Beyond Music Discovery” on July 16, I saw that Rolling Stone Magazine covered the significance that the $17 million funding The Echo Nest acquired is channeling into “Fanalytics,” the feature that will connect matching users who share similar musical tastes and listening patterns. It makes logical sense that Rolling Stone Magazine reported on this story since RS was involved with the launch of Spotify’s Music Application Platform . Rolling Stone Recomends is their Spotify App.

Rolling Stone Reccomends

The co-founders of The Echo Nest, Tristan Jehan (CTO) and Brian Whitman (CTO) were the in-studio guests on Boston Public Radio recently. The interview that Edgar B. Herwick III conducted with them provides valuable insight into their analysis and scientific methods. They are modest about what they are doing. They readily admit that 15 years into their project they are only beginning to develop the analytics, the semaphores for how to harness the music cloud we all interact with in the music of our heart.

I am fascinated to learn as much as I can about with where music and technology are converging. We have entered the age of Web 3.0, the Semantic Web where machine to machine total knowledge builds a highly stylized and formulaic music intelligentsia. The Echo Nest is a première example of Web 3.0 at its finest in a well conceived architectural platform.

Our Office

Stay tuned for what The Echo Nest will wrought for technology music devotees, it’s very stimulating stuff ;)

Coca-Cola Music and Spotify, A Strategic Partnership

The Olympic Games begin on July 27, a scant six days from now. Coca-Cola has a long-standing history with the Olympics. They are the longest continuous sponsor of the Olympics since 1928. The world will be focused on London, England and international competition. The purpose of this blog post is to share what is known about the strategic partnership between Coca-Cola and Spotify.

The London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games unites us all. I love that music plays a strategic role in motivating us for the  Olympiad. Every time I see the  London Calling  commercial by British Airways I bristle with anticipation. It’s raised The Clash, “The Only Band That Matters” to a new level with a new audience. Here is the UK version… (Go Team USA!)

The Olympics opening ceremony will be closed out by Paul McCartney. This video from Paul is a great tongue in cheek about the pull the plug curfew incident.

Before I digress any further about the Olympics and music, let me get back to the reason for this blog post. Yesterday we celebrated Spotify’s First Year Birthday in the U.S.A. I discovered during my research that a strategic partnership has formed between Coca-Cola and Spotify. I find this partnership appealing on multiple levels.

Under the terms of the agreement, Spotify will be the key underlying technology for Coca-Cola Music globally, supporting the brand’s mission to give consumers universal access to music. In addition, Coca-Cola will integrate Spotify into its Facebook presence and Timeline, creating a seamless social music experience. This partnership takes advantage of the existing Spotify relationship with Facebook and the Coca-Cola Facebook audience of over 40 million fans to create a social experience that will reach millions of interconnected consumers around the world.

According to Daniel Ek, CEO of Spotify, ”Spotify and Coca-Cola both believe that music, technology and creativity can connect people around the globe.”

The main level of appeal for me is the technology initiative between the two companies. I teach an ethical hacking course and I am learning that music hack events (called hackdens, hackjams, hackathons) abound these days. The video from the Coca-Cola Press Center shows how energized Spotify & Coca-Cola and hackers got with their April 14-15 2012 hackden in New York City (if only I had known….)

The winning software development team was London Calling. The new app will be unveiled for the 2012 Olympics in London. Musicofourheart will get back to you when the app launches!

Happy Birthday Spotify

It has been a rewarding and incredible year as a U.S. Spotify Day One subscriber. Spotify is my daily listening source for music. When I get ready to leave my garage everyday for the daily commute, I choose the Spotify App, plug into the music I want to hear and it comes to me through my car audio system.

I want to especially congratulate Daniel Ek, the Spotify team and the Spotify App business partners. Spotify the music platform is ingenious.

I have a great deal of admiration for the technical co-operation between Spotify and The Echo Nest. Spotify in the Cloud is a beautiful thing.

I urge Spotify to partner with Neil Young‘s High Resolution Audio Player when that technology becomes available.

Keep on rocking me, Spotify. I’m your biggest fan ;)

Microsoft’s XBox Music, Engaging & Interactive Thru XBox Smart Glass

Microsoft announced the “Woodstock” XBox Music platform delivery strategy today at the keynote press conference before the beginning of E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the annual video game conference and show.

Xbox Music will offer more than 30 million songs on Xbox 360s, Windows 8 PCs, tablets and phones. I find the 30 million number more than coincidental due to the fact that “The Intelligent Music Platform – The Echo Nest” metabase distibutes nearly 30 million songs with 340 apps right now. It makes total sense that Microsoft would integrate XBox Music and XBox Smart Glass with The Echo Nest back end. (If that is in fact what they did for I have no actual confirmation from Microsoft they are using The Echo Nest Rosetta Stone, but then again why wouldn’t they???).

I perceive XBox Music as Microsoft’s Semantic Web music throw down to Apple iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, Pandora, etc. etc.  My understanding is that Apple and Android device owners can all play in the XBox Music Web distributed network.

The XBox Music program announcement further enhances Microsoft’s mission to solidify a leadership platform role with gamers. The XBox console serves as an intelligent entertainment hub in Microsoft’s Windows 8 entertainment strategy.

Getting an XBox system for the new entertainment center in the living room is a fait accompli.

Xbox SmartGlass is an application for Windows 8, Windows Phone, and other portable devices that connects phones, PCs and tablets with your Xbox 360 console to make your entertainment smarter, more interactive and more fun. The intelligence of Xbox SmartGlass makes your entertainment more engaging, Web surfing more effortless, and playing games more immersive by delivering companion content and control to enhance your TV experience.

I am eager to see how Apple responds to Microsoft’s XBox announcement with Mountain Lion, Apple TV, iTunes, iDevices etc.

The Beach Boys Portal

As a technology instructor I am constantly talking to my students about Internet Web Portals. These are key Web sites that serve as a central collection point for information and services.

http://www.globaltimes.cn/DesktopModules/DnnForge%20-%20NewsArticles/ImageHandler.ashx?Width=550&Height=800&HomeDirectory=%2FPortals%2F0%2F&FileName=attachment%2F2011%2F5eb91706-4dd2-4e27-b165-7e6e9a174919.jpg&PortalID=0&q=1

I was researching The Beach Boys on the Web this past week when I happened upon the Portal: The Beach Boys from wikipedia. It’s a central clearing house of knowledge and information about America’s greatest rock and roll group.

My only issue with Portal: The Beach Boys is that in the wikipedia Music Portal, The Beach Boys are not a sub-category, rather their information section is considered a Page. I’d like to see their content elevated to a sub-category level in the future

Daniel Ek, CEO at Spotify – Leading disruption to forge the music ecosystem

Daniel Ek’s knowing smile graces the cover of Forbes Magazine, January 16th issue. At 28 years of age he is the most important man in music now. He is CEO and co-founder of Spotify, the Web music ecosystem. Spotify is radically altering how we interact with music in the cloud. It’s a disruption whose time is a necessity. Spotify is the salvation for the music industry against Internet music piracy.

Daniel Ek On The Cover Of Forbes

I couldn’t be happier with Spotify’s achievements on our behalf. I have sung the praises of Spotify ever since their Web music service hit our shores. I am proud to say I became a day one US Spotify premium member on July 14, 2011 :)

Spotify continues to amaze me as it becomes the intersection of music and technology in the Web. It is a prime example of a well executed Web 3.0 Semantic application. I am especially keen on how Spotify the music platform interacts with the aggregate sum total of music intelligence that is the echo nest. Spotify Radio is the vehicle that leverages the direct  API interaction with the echo nest API of 30 million songs (5 billion data points.) Now that’s what I call a music cloud ;)

Spotify Apps

Spotify continues to lead and innovate the music-streaming experience. I am very impressed by Spotify’s Phase II strategy.

Daniel Ek, Spotify CEO states, “We’ve arrived at a crucial moment when we have both scale and momentum, and we’re getting people used to the idea again that music is worth paying for.”

The next phase of Spotify is Spotify Apps. App Finder is a dashboard that lets us lean back and sift through results of music trends in the form of rich playlists. Prominent music publications, services and blogs like Rolling Stone Magazine, Billboard, Last.fm, and Pitchfork supply interpretive analytic data to us in digestible, usable form.

I especially like how nimble the HTML 5 Apps are for my use. They are definitely designed with future interactions in mind. Spotify understands the intelligence and sophistication of its hard-core subscribers. Spotify is acting as the conduit to further the relationship between rich music information sources and the ever attentive listening public.

Thomas Dolby – A Map Of The Floating City

I subscribe to the Los Angeles Times Music Blog, it’s called Pop & Hiss. Don’t you just love that title ;) It keeps me informed about what is going on in the L.A. music scene, 3,000+ miles away. Today’s post was stimulating to read and then dig further into.  Thomas Dolby has returned to the music scene after a 20 year absence. He will have a new solo album entitled, A Map of the Floating City available in the market on October 25th.

A Map Of The Floating City

“You know what they say about how your first album you’re drawing on 20 years of life experience, and the second you’re drawing on six months? – Thomas Dolby

Dolby has been at the forefront with experimentation with new forms of media ever since he broke onto the pop scene with his 1983 hit “She Blinded Me With Science.” It was an enormous video smash on MTV in MTV’s heyday. I never tire of grooving to it. It is always fresh and fun. I love yelling “Science” as I am sure many of you do. ;)

I lost track of Thomas Dolby in the sea of music and decades that followed. I am chuffed that he is back in vogue again. I wish I had known he was playing in New York City earlier this month, I would have attended that event. I’ll have to catch him in 2012 when he brings the full band around the US with him.

Thomas Dolby is a creative innovator. His grasp of what the market requires is topographically  insightful.  A Map of the Floating City  was developed with interactivity in mind. It’s a video game combined with social networking. It’s centerpiece is the “FREE” web-based “Floating City” game which is integrated with his new album and tour. It goes beyond multimedia. It’s a Web 3.0 experience.

Happy Birthday Thomas Dolby.

I plan to celebrate your birthday immersing myself in Floating City, visit more thoroughly your well designed Web site and listen more intently to the EPs of your new music. I invite my friends and music readers to immerse themselves as well.
