Pat Metheny Unity Group – KIN (←→)

I dig Pat Metheny. He is a creative musician who composes and performs rich, textured music that I love to get lost inside.  I was informed this past week that the Pat Metheny Unity Group will be releasing a new album,  KIN (←→).

My affinity for vinyl prompted me to pre-order the German pressed 140-gram 2 LP set that includes a complete CD and an exclusive print of the cover art signed by Pat himself ;)

I love the graphics design for the album cover.

“The core quartet of Chris, Ben, Antonio and I played over 100 concerts over the year that followed the release of our Unity Band record. Over the course of that period, the band became one of those rare combinations of players where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts – it gelled in every way, and that just seemed to beg for expansion and further research. Concurrently, I had been kind of itching to write more in the style that I had developed over the years with my regular groups and projects where there is a lush and more orchestrated kind of compositional conception that went beyond the sonic limits of what a straight ahead quartet might invoke. But I really didn’t want to lose the energy, focus and intensity of what this band had developed. I wanted to take it further. If the first Unity Band record was a thoughtful, black and white documentary of four musicians in a recording studio playing, this record is more like the Technicolor, IMAX version of what a band like this could be—but with that hardcore thing still sitting right in the middle of it all.” ~ Pat Metheny

The Pat Metheny Unity Group consists of Pat Metheny (Guitar), Chris Potter (Sax), Antonio Sanchez (Drums), Ben Williams (Bass), and Giulio Carmassi (Multi-Instrumentalist).

I see that the Pat Metheny Unity Group has announced a world tour and that a concert is taking place at the Quick Center for the Arts on the Fairfield University campus on March 25th, 2014. I plan to make that our first concert ticket buy for 2014 ;)

Westport 6th Annual Blues, Views & BBQ Festival

The 6th Annual Westport Blues, Views & BBQ Festival takes place Saturday August 31 and Sunday September 1. Westport is responsible for shaping my music consciousness the past 45 years.

I have seen several notable acts at Staples High School such as The Youngbloods, J Geils Band, Tom Hardin, Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, Taj Mahal (with the Howard Johnson Tuba Orchestra), The Mahavishnu Orchestra , and Peter Frampton.

There was the venerable Players Tavern an intimate club setting where I saw Muddy Waters, Peter Tosh, Toots and the Maytals, Pat Metheny, Richie Havens, and Melanie.

I like the idea of gastronomic delights intermixed with great blues/rock music. Feed the stomach and nurture the soul.

Sunday September 1st’s schedule features:

Collaboration: Pat Metheny and John Zorn

The latest Pat Metheny collaboration with John Zorn,  Tap: The Book of Angels Vol. 20 is available for purchase and digital download. The recording is available both on Pat Metheny’ s Nonesuch label and John Zorn’s Tadzik label. I chose the Tzadik iTunes download based on cover design and format (AAC = MP4 vs. MP3).

Ever curious, courageous and endlessly creative, virtuoso guitarist and musical mastermind Pat Metheny takes on John Zorn’s Masada songbook to create some of the most soulful and adventurous sounds yet heard in the Book of Angels series. Turn up the volume and revel in the breadth of imagination in these remarkable arrangements featuring Pat on a huge arsenal of instruments, and the powerful Antonio Sanchez on drums. Pat Metheny continues to surprise and experiment with new musical frontiers well into the 21st century. Released in coordination with Nonesuch, this is a match made in Heaven—essential!

Personnel:
Willow Metheny: Vocals (Pat Metheny’s daughter)
Pat Metheny: Orchestra Bells, Orchestrionic Marimba, Keyboards, Piano, Bass, Tiples, Sitar Guitar, Baritone Guitar, Acoustic And Electric Guitars, Bandoneon, Percussion, Electronics, Flugelhorn

Proud of Ted Kurland Associates and Their Artists’s Grammy Nominations

The music industry is built upon solid reputation and focused management. I have always deeply respected Ted Kurland Associates as the “Gold Standard” for artist management and representation. Ten years ago I contacted their office about  wanting to meet Pat Metheny after a concert for a possible autograph and photograph. The person I spoke to at their office was cordial to me as a fan and told me exactly how to carry out that aim. Sure enough it worked just like she told me and I got my wish to meet Pat Metheny, say hello, get a photo and have him sign some mementos for me. A pivotal private moment for me as a Pat Metheny fan, one I cherish :)

I  gained a strong appreciation for Ted Kurland Associates ever since that night. I saw how uniquely they manage, publicize and represent their roster of artists. I am proud to share with the readers of MusicOfOurHeart that Ted Kurland Associates and artists have accumulated the most Grammy nominations ever this year, 13 for 2013 to be precise.

ChickandGary

I can’t think of a better tribute to Ted Kurland Associates and their artists than this achievement. I hope it yields the highest amount of Grammy Awards next year for all involved!

Widening Horizon – Olga Spiegel

My favorite musical genre the past decade has been jazz. I enjoy jazz for the improvisation and inventiveness of the musicians, the instruments that they master and the nature of the compositions.

Jazz appeals to my intellect. It is the most stimulating of all the music genres I listen to and that I absorb into my consciousness.

I love jazz because I encounter it a technical person as cerebral. Jazz takes me on profound and satisfying journeys.

The jazz musician I journey with most innately is Pat Metheny. I have seen Pat Metheny in concert several times live. He has taken me on some memorable, breath-taking excursions. Give a listen to Orchestrion or We Live Here and you will understand why I make such claims. I trust you will be transported.

Pat Metheny’s Unity Band

One thing is certain, Pat Metheny continually reinvents himself through the music he performs either solo, pneumatically assisted with the vast electronics of Orchestrion or with his next jazz ensemble. I love the journey his creativity enables in my psyche. :)

Unity Band members

Chris Potter, Antonio Sanchez, Pat Metheny, Ben Williams

Pat Metheny is actively working a new jazz quartet called the Unity Band. The band consists of Chris Potter on saxophone (saw him play live with Herbie Hancock), who exudes an excellent phrasing and presence. The Unity Band features one of my favorite accent drummers, Antonio Sanchez who I have seen live twice with Pat Metheny. Antonio is a phenomenal drummer who draws me further in with his percussive stylings. Ben Williams on bass is the new musician to my ears. I am eager to hear his interplay and contributions with the Unity Band.

They have a new recording Unity Band available on June 12th from Nonesuch Records. The only way that you can hear the Unity Band right now is to pre-order the Unity Band CD. You will receive an instant download of the opening track, “New Year” and an autographed print from the album art which is suitable for framing. ;)

Pat Metheny – Cherish from What’s It All About

1995–present

Image via Wikipedia

What's It All About cover artNonesuch Records, Pat Metheny‘s record label is hosting video updates this week for Pat’s new album, What’s It All About. Thus far there are four of the 10 tracks from the CD listed on the Nonesuch Media page.

My current favorite on What’s It All About is Pat Metheny’s cover of The Association‘s “Cherish”. Like many of you we have heard this song played many times on the radio over the decades and it never really gets old. I saw The Association perform it live in 2009 at Infinity Hall. I feel Pat’s rendition adds new life and added dimensionality to this song. He plays it on the baritone guitar superbly.

Pat Metheny Solo – What’s It All About

I just pre-ordered the new Pat Metheny solo recording, What’s It All About from Music Today. The pre-order includes a limited edition, 9″ by 12″ print (a number of which will be signed, fingers crossed here ;) and the download track “Alfie”. I like how the guitar track feels so smooth :)

The new acoustic solo guitar album from Pat Metheny features classic tunes from songwriters like Paul Simon, Lennon & McCartney, Burt Bacharach, and Henry Mancini. Pat describes it like this: “I wanted to record some of the music that was on my radar before I ever wrote a note of my own, or in a few cases, even before I played an instrument. Every one of these tunes has something going on that is just hip on a musical level, no matter how you cut it. They have all stuck with me over the years.”

CD Track Listing:

1. The Sound of Silence (Paul Simon) 6:33
2. Cherish (Terry Kirkman) 5:25
3. Alfie (Burt Bacharach & Hal David) 7:41
4. Pipeline (Bob Spickard & Brian Carman) 3:23
5. Garota de Ipanema (Antonio Carlos Jobim & Vinicius de Moraes) 5:07
6. Rainy Days and Mondays (Roger S. Nichols & Paul H. Williams) 7:10
7. That’s the Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be (Carly Simon & Jacob Brackman) 5:57
8. Slow Hot Wind (Henry Mancini & Normal Gimbel) 4:23
9. Betcha by Golly, Wow (Thomas Bell & Linda Creed) 5:12
10. And I Love Her (John Lennon & Paul McCartney) 4:22
