The Doobie Brothers – Listen to the Music

The Doobie Brothers are my chosen topic for the Music of Our Heart 400th post. Their song, “Listen to the Music“, from has been my earworm today. I love how the Donn Landee engineered the sonics on the Doobie Brothers first hit. Donn utilized the sounds he invented on Eric Burdon and the Animals’ hit, “Sky Pilot“. What really grabs the listener’s attention in “Listen to the Music” are the stratosphere guitar riffs which are strongly accented by the syncopation of the two Doobie Brothers drummers.

Listen to the Music

The Doobie Brothers had 9 Top 20 singles in the Hot 100 from 1972-1989. They are a venerable American Rock & Roll institution for more than 40+ years.

There have been different eras of The Doobie Brothers starting with the first hit making group in 1972 with Tolouse Street.

Two of the most recognizable foundation members who still play with steadfast conviction in 2011 are guitarist/vocalist/songwriters Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons.

Doobie Brothers 1971

  • Tom Johnston – guitars, keyboards, harmonica, vocals
  • Patrick Simmons – guitars, banjo, flute, vocals
  • Dave Shogren – bass, guitar, backing vocals
  • Michael Hossack – drums, percussion
  • John Hartman – drums, percussion, backing vocals

Then there was the period from 1974-1979 with Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, (infamous session guitarist who also played with Steely Dan). This period was then overlapped with the  Michael McDonald  era (1975-1987). Michael served as an identifiable vocalist and keyboards player.

The Doobie Brothers still tour strongly each year and give their fans lots of love coupled with enthusiasm.
