“The present-day composer refuses to die.” Edgard Varèse
Next Wednesday October 23rd, The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra led by Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen will perform the Orchestral World Premiere of Frank Zappa’s 200 Motels. This performance kicks off the 10TH Anniversary Celebration of the Walt Disney Concert Hall Series in Los Angeles, California.
In May 1970 at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion, Zubin Mehta led the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention in the world première of Zappa’s Concerto for Mothers and Orchestra. Zappa incorporated some of that music into the score for his surrealistic band-on-the-road film 200 Motels
200 Motels will feature a cast of renowned soloists and a band that includes Ian Underwood of Zappa’s The Mothers of Invention, Zappa friends and collaborators Scott Thunes, Joe Travers, and Jamie Kime. Diva Zappa will be making her stage acting début as Janet.
“I believe in my heart of hearts that someone on the board (of the Philharmonic) said it’s about time,” Zappa’s widow Gail Zappa told Billboard. “This music was written before our children were even conceived and they have never had a chance to hear his music in a proper concert hall.”
