The 2015 All-Star Global Concert will feature a cast of internationally renowned jazz artists including pianists John Beasley (Music Director), A Bu, Eliane Elias, Antonio Faraò, Isfar Sarabski and Herbie Hancock; trumpeters Till Brönner, Avishai Cohen, Hugh Masekela and Claudio Roditi; vocalists Dee Dee Bridgewater, Al Jarreau, Annie Lennox, Rudy Pérez and Dianne Reeves; saxophonists Igor Butman, Femi Kuti, Guillaume Perret and Wayne Shorter; bassists James Genus, Marcus Miller and Ben Williams; guitarist Lee Ritenour; drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, percussionist Mino Cinelu, harmonica player Grégoire Maret, and oud player Dhafer Youssef.
Pete Townsend has that unique talent to reinvent himself with his music. Imagine you write, score and deliver two major rock operas in your life. That is an amazing feat. The evolution of Quadrophenia into “Classic Quadrophenia” adds dimensionality and superb texture. For the last three years Townshend has worked closely with his partner Rachel Fuller on brand new arrangements for orchestra, soloists and choir. The results add a greater meaning to our existence through love, sea and life’s epic journey.
Classic Quadrophenia will be released by the esteemed classical label Deutsche Grammophon. It features the London Oriana Choir and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The world premiere will take place on July 5th, 2015, at the Royal Albert Hall, London. Would love to attend that event.

The high degree of usability WordPress provides in their blogging and content management system validates their global success. WordPress is a premier example of Open Source triumphant. WordPress was used by more than 23.3% of the top 10 million websites as of January 2015.
The WordPress design/development team is constantly improving how efficiently their technology allows us to express and commuincate our thoughts with readers. The rapid constant delivery of invaluable features in WordPress versions increases the excitement for me as a music technologist/journalist. It is my favorite community in the Web to participate with and benefit from.
Each new version of WordPress is named after a famous jazz musician. I love to anticipate who that featured musician will be each successive release. WordPress 4.2, “Powell” is named after jazz pianist Bud Powell, a leading figure in the development of bebop. Powell was also a composer, and he “greatly extended the range of jazz harmony.”
Its been great getting updated by Rickie Lee Jones about her next recording, “The Other Side of Desire” on PledgeMusic. As a devout music fan I love being in the loop during the artistic process.

It’s been an exciting month plus for the original members of Santana and longtime Santana fans.
Texas – March 19
The Santana IV Reunion “Live” commences in stages. Gregg Rolie joins Santana in Corpus Christie, Texas on March 19th. It serves as a dress rehearsal for the Santana Mexico concerts to follow.
Mexico – March
Santana reunion efforts began to further gel when Gregg goes on to perform with Carlos and the Band in Monterrey, MX, Cumbre Tajin Festival and at two special co-headline events with Journey in Guadalajara and Mexico City.

Things really get exciting when the original Santana nucleus expands when Journey and Santana co-headline. We see Neal Schon playing guitar with Carlos Santana set against the rhythmic backdrop of the Santana band.
Neal Schon has been the motivator pushing for the Santana reunion. I am thankful that he has been instrumental in driving Santana IV to that goal.

The stage is set for completing the Santana IV recording in Las Vegas the next month. Can you say supercharged? I knew that you could 😉
Las Vegas – April 2015
The Santana IV Reunion scene shifts to Las Vegas, Nevada. The composition and recording of the final three tracks for the Santana IV recording enters high gear. The Santana IV recording team and studio musicians assemble at Odds On Records and Studios (Audio Mix House) in Henderson, Nevada. Michael Shrieve and Michael Carabello join Neal, Gregg and Carlos to put down the last tracks for Santana IV. They are joined by Benny Rietveld on bass and Karl Perazzo on percussion. Jim Reitzel, Head Engineer at Tarpan Studios mans the boards, coordinating the sounds Santana IV seeks to make. Jim has worked actively with Santana over the years. He becomes the glue to bond Santana IV together. I wonder if he will also be chiefly responsible for the mixing that follows next?
I wonder what record label Santana IV will be released and distributed by. Who has the rights? SONY, Arista, or Starfish?
My hat is off to Santana IV!

We are fortunate to have the camera team of Libby Fabro and Chad Tasky documenting the events. I think Libby Fabro is a photographer for Team Santana. Chad Tasky is a San Francisco based photographer and filmmaker. Chad was a drum tech for Santana for a time. Props to both photographers for being our inside image sources for Santana IV. Your respective photos are superb.
Julia Wolfe, a composer associated with the new-music collective Bang on a Can was awardedthe Pulitzer Prize for music for Anthracite Fields. The Pulitzer jury described the piece as “a powerful oratorio for chorus and sextet evoking Pennsylvania coal-mining life around the turn of the 20th century.” The hour-long work was commissioned by the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia, which gave the world première, along with the Bang on a Can All-Stars, April 26, 2014 in Philadelphia.
The recording of Anthracite Fieldsis planned to be released in September.
I recall the time when I was first seduced by rock music journalism. I soon became a voracious reader of publications like Rolling Stone, Creem and the East Village Other. Rock music writing influenced my record buying habits, concert attendance and what I listened to on the progressive FM radio dial.
Rock journalists such as Lester Bangs, Ed Ward, Cameron Crowe, and Greil Marcus expanded my consciousness. They added to the depth of my cultural understanding of rock and roll.
The documentary, Ticket To Write covers the fifteen year period from 1966 starting with Crawdaddy up until the MTV video age in 1981. Many of my favorite music journalists are interviewed, discussed and portrayed in this film.
I have been writing about music since 1973 and these authors are my true heroes. Rolling Stone Magazine is still with us, many of the 60-70’s music magazines are not. Today we live in an age where digital music companies like TIDAL HiFi and Apple Music curate music with notable authors. Greil Marcus and Robert Christgau continue to extend music journalism in electronic and book published form.
I’m thankful that Edward Turner (Producer) and Raul Sandelin (Director) followed their passion to create such a necessary documentary. Plan to read more about the film and the people bringing it to the screen, Road Ahead Productions in future blog posts.
I was acknowledged today of the first trailer for her new album which releases on June 23rd, 2015. The album was recorded in Rickie Lee Jones hometown of New Orleans.
I can only imagine the emotional rollercoaster it has been for Rickie Lee Jones as she fights to perpetuate her art in this digital music age. This is particularly clear when the video juxtaposes her first hit single, “Chuck E.’s In Love” with her present life. I respect her anger with a music industry that attempts to limit her role as a vital American musician.
Thank God we can elevate her by funding this valuable recording project. I hope you will share in my enthusiasm for Rickie Lee Jones compositions. Her contributions as a singer/songwriter merit our respect and admiration.
