Michael Stipe: The Man Who Sold The World

I was watching the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon when I heard Jimmy mention that Michael Stipe would be performing a tribute to David Bowie. I did everything in my power to stay awake for Michael’s performance. I had been missing his soulful voice. I wasn’t disappointed.

It was a great teaser for the The Music of David Bowie tribute concert which sold out in minutes at Carnegie Hall on Thursday March 31st and Friday April 1st. The Friday night concert will be streamed for a suggested donation of $20. Donations benefit various NY City music education programs. A cause near and dear to the music of our heart 🙂

Here is Michael Stipe’s segment. I love how it is just Micheal invoking Bowie set against a solo pianist. Striking. Welcome back, Michael. It’s wonderful to hear you singing from your heart once more.

A Celebration for Ray Manzarek – February 12th, 2016

I think of Ray Manzarek often. I found him to be a very approachable artist. I met Ray Manzarek several times before and after performances. I miss his spirit and soulful intellect.

We wish we could attend the celebration for Ray Manzarek.  Robby Krieger, John Densmore, and an all-star band will be performing play in Ray’s memory at the Fonda Theater in Los Angeles on February 12th, Ray’s 77th birthday. Robby and John will also be joined by some very special friends throughout the evening.

All proceeds will benefit Stand Up To Cancer.

The Magic of Santana – Featuring Tony Lindsay and Alex Ligertwood

Tone and Respect to The Magic of Santana.

The Magic of Santana is Europe’s premier Santana show, now featuring Original Members of Carlos Santana’s band. This show was the first Tony Lindsay, one of the two lead singers of present day Santana has ever performed with a Santana “tribute” band. More importantly it was the first time in over twenty years that Tony Lindsay and Alex Ligertwood have shared a stage together.

It was magical.

Alex Ligertwood was Lead Vocalist for Santana from 1979-1994. He has also performed with The Jeff Beck Group, Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express, the Average White Band, Narada Michael Walden, David Sancious, and others.

The Magic of Santana is also the first Santana “tribute” band Alex has ever performed with since leaving Carlos Santana in 1994.

Tony Lindsay is an 11x Grammy Winner and has been the Lead Vocalist for Santana since 1991. He has worked with Aretha Franklin, Teddy Pendergrass, Lou Rawls, Steve Winwood and Curtis Mayfield, and others.

Recorded LIVE at the Kurhaus, Bad Fallingbostel, Oct 13th, 2012.

The Fest for Beatles Fans 2014

2014 ushers in the 50th anniversary celebration of the British Invasion. I’ll never forget The Beatles arrival at New York’s Kennedy Airport on February 7, 1964. It was a school day and I had snuck my Sears

Silvertone AM transistor radio into 8th grade Science class listening to The Beatles being met at the airplane gate by thousands of screaming fans. I was fortunate that my Science teacher, Mrs. Barnum was hard of hearing so I could hear history in the making from inside my desk 😉

Exciting Mule-O-Ween 2013 Development!

I posted a “speculative” blog post on September 27th, Mule-O-Ween 2013 – A Doors Tribute?. My personal thanks to Ida Miller Doors Super Fan who has been responsible for publishing an authoritative Doors Fan Site for many years. Ida substantiated that my door of perception about the Gov’t. Mule 2013 Mule-O-Ween shows would be about The Doors and more exciting than that Robby Krieger will be playing along with Gov’t. Mule in Los Angeles, 10/30 and Oakland 10/31.

I know deep inside the music of our heart that these shows will pay loving tribute and honor to Ray Manzarek’s memory, which is ever-present like Jim Morrison.

Robby Krieger posted the substantiation of his participation in Mule-O-Ween 2013 on his Facebook page on 10/12:

Every Halloween, Gov’t Mule does a show featuring the music of another band. This year it’s The Doors with special guest, Robby Krieger! On the 30th they will do a show in LA at the Fonda Theater, and then on the 31st in Oakland at the Fox Theater. Check it out of you can!

I sure do wish I could get out to LA for the 10/30 show. At the very least I plan to order the 10/30 & 10/31 shows from MuleTracks when they become available. 🙂

Where’s My Mule? 😉 Rocking real soon with Robby Krieger!

Mule-O-Ween 2013 – A Doors Tribute?

The past few years Gov’t. Mule has performed a special Halloween concert in various U.S. cities as part of their fall tour.  They select a famous rock group and pay tribute to their legacy. Past Mule-O-Ween shows have featured Gov’t. Mule playing the music of Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, The Who and Led Zeppelin. The Mule will choose a favorite album by these artists and play that album in its entirety.

This year it looks like Gov’t. Mule will be honoring The Doors in Los Angeles 10/30 and Oakland 10/31. There has been no official announcement but the poster design seems to indicate this as that is the fonts and the color scheme of The Doors. It will be awesome if they invited Robbie Krieger and/or John Densmore to play with them. That is purely speculation on my part.

I love that they will be honoring the late Ray Manzarek who we greatly miss and The Doors that night.

Greetings from Tim Buckley – A New Independent Film

I am enthusiastic to learn about a new independent film, Greetings from Tim Buckley by TriBeca Film. It will be available for rental from iTunes starting April 16th. The film opens on May 3rd in New York and Los Angeles.

Official Trailer

Penn Badgley channels Jeff Buckley in this clip from “Greetings From Tim Buckley” as he sings Buckley’s famous cover of his father’s song, ‘Once I Was.’ The movie leads up to this deciding moment when Jeff Buckley is discovered by the world on this stage. The torch is passed from father to son through the shared music inherent in their respective DNA.

Queen Extravaganza Tour – June 9th, 2012, Oakdale

We’re going to take a chance on the Queen Extravaganza event. I like what I am reading and seeing about this Queen Tribute Show. It’s rare when original members of a rock superstar group go to this length to arrange for this level of extravaganza. Never having seen Queen when they performed together, back in the day, its nice to have this opportunity to witness this event. Plus the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, CT is just a stones throw away so we must attend 🙂

The pairing of Roger Taylor and Brian May with American Idol proves to be a striking combination. If this segment is just a hint at the 2 hour, 40 song tribute show, then we’re in for a fascinating entertainment experience.

Two of Queen’s original band mates and songwriters—legendary guitarist Brian May and iconic drummer Roger Taylor—are the masterminds behind The Queen Extravaganza. Roger Taylor, Queen’s drummer is the show’s producer and music director.

To guarantee that the touring show matches the fabled design and excitement of Queen at its live best, Taylor has enlisted a heavyweight production team headed by stage designer Mark Fisher. Fisher has been responsible for some of the most memorable rock concerts ever staged, including The Wall for Pink Floyd and every Rolling Stones show since 1989.

“The Queen Extravaganza will not be like a traditional tribute show,” says Taylor. “It is a brand new show specially designed to enable these new fans, together with fans of old, to celebrate the music of Queen in a heart-stopping event. It’s going to be very spectacular, it’s going to be very visual, there are going to be some shocks and some tremendous surprises. It will be a rock celebration in the Royal tradition.”
