Two Neil Youngs On A Tree Stump

I enjoy when Jimmy Fallon does his Neil Young impression. Last night on The Tonight Show Jimmy and Neil performed on a rotating tree stump in the middle of a dark, swampy forest, with animals looking on with them.

The purpose of the song was to promote Neil Young’s newest album, Earth. I have my copy on pre-order at Pono Music. I will be downloading and listening to the Pono edition 192.0kHz/24bit on Friday June 24th. It is perfectly suited for my Neil Young Limited Edition Pono player 😉

Michael Stipe: The Man Who Sold The World

I was watching the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon when I heard Jimmy mention that Michael Stipe would be performing a tribute to David Bowie. I did everything in my power to stay awake for Michael’s performance. I had been missing his soulful voice. I wasn’t disappointed.

It was a great teaser for the The Music of David Bowie tribute concert which sold out in minutes at Carnegie Hall on Thursday March 31st and Friday April 1st. The Friday night concert will be streamed for a suggested donation of $20. Donations benefit various NY City music education programs. A cause near and dear to the music of our heart 🙂

Here is Michael Stipe’s segment. I love how it is just Micheal invoking Bowie set against a solo pianist. Striking. Welcome back, Michael. It’s wonderful to hear you singing from your heart once more.

Neil Young and Jack White Appear on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon

It was reassuring to witness late night television serve as the validation of the Neil Young and Jack White collaboration that I have been very intent upon owning. Jimmy Fallon is devout a fan of music  box sets. He has previously hosted a week long series of shows that highlighted the The Rolling StonesExile on Main Street collector’s box set (which I also own). Last night he honored the Neil Young/Jack White collaboration, A Letter Home a forthcoming limited edition box set (May 27th).

The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon arranged for delivery and setup of Jack White’s 1947 Voice-O-Graph vinyl recording booth on the NBC Tonight Show stage in New York City. This was a magnanimous  gesture that allowed a large viewing and studio audience to witness Neil Young record the hit by Patsy Cline, “Crazy”, a song written by Willie Nelson inside that booth.

Atomic Bomb! The Music of William Onyeabar, David Byrne and Others ;)

The world of music is infinite and that’s a positive vibration for the planet. Speaking of positive vibrations have you heard of William Onyeabar? I just learned about his unique rhythmic music this morning . William Onyeabar was a funk musician from Nigeria. According to the Luaka Bop record label, Onyeabor “self-released 8 albums between 1978 and 1985 and then became a born-again Christian, refusing ever to speak about himself or his music again.

Onyeabar’s music speaks volumes by itself and more explosively through the interpretation  of others. David Byrne who knows how music works has assembled the Atomic Bomb Band. They made their major network debut on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Put on your ten-gallon hat and groove to “Fantastic Man“.

David Byrne, the Atomic Bomb Band and other fervent Onyeabar stalwarts are performing in Los Angeles and San Francisco this week.

The US Premiere took place on May 2 & 3 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Howard Gilman Opera House.

Give them a listen, you will be happily astonished at how good a groove they generate.

I Squee for Love Music Again, Wired Interactive Magazine!!!!

Kudos to the Wired Magazine team and Questlove for a well executed focus on digital music and technology. Questlove has become the center point, the grounding agent for music this decade. He is listed as guest DJ on the vibrant cover of the March 2014 issue.

Questlove is more than just a guest DJ as you are probably aware. He has written two extensive books, Mo’ Meta Blues: The World According to Questlove and Soul Train: The Music, Dance, and Style of a GenerationHe is a music professor at NYU Clive Davis teaching a course entitled Classic Albums.

He is leading The Roots as Jimmy Fallon’s house band on The Tonight Show. There are many more music projects Questlove has been involved with and is working upon. How does he juggle these projects is what I want to know 😉

Wired Magazine is available as a Webzine on the Wired Website. It is also available as the classic print edition from Conde Nast Publications. I especially love the technical inroads Wired Magazine has accomplished with Adobe Digital Publishing Solutions as an interactive digital magazine.

I first read the “love music again” special issue as the print hard copy magazine. The color photography by Pari Dukovic is superb. Questlove and the Wired team lead by Peter Rubin have created a visual graphics design masterpiece that is a marvel to discover, explore, discover and gain substantive resources that will increase your music intellect.

I followed up with Wired’s Website but I found the music essay too chopped up in chunks to appreciate that particular deliverable.

The preferred reading and multimedia experience is the Wired App from iTunes. The Wired Magazine March 2014 “Digital” edition is better integrated with Wired Web. It also inserts Questlove video links that embellish the content exponentially. You’ll love the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00’s, 2014 Spotify/YouTube playlists as a backdrop. (The playlists are also accessible through Questlove’s essay on Wired.com.)

I had an exciting and pleasurable journey with Questlove/Wired Magazine today through all three media experiences. What an awesome way to share music published technology. I am better informed and educated as a result of this experience.

Each one, teach one, spread it around forever – Questlove

Vanilla Fudge Final Tour

Vanilla Fudge is touring this spring for the last time. They are playing Mohegan Sun Wolf Den, Saturday May 14th 😉 I’d love to see them there.  I have seen them play Oakdale and Toads Place in the past few years. They so rock da house.

Here is their appearance on Jimmy Fallon Monday night, 3/28/11. It was uploaded to YouTube from an Android Phone.

Here is a classic video of them playing that same song in 1968 on The Ed Sullivan Show
